What is a router ? How does it work? What does it do and how do you use it ?
The concept is so simple that it hardly requires an explanation, but before I offer one anyway, let's look at woodworking generally.
Suppose you want to smooth a piece of wood flat, cut a dovetail or perhaps a mortice and tenon joint, cut a wooden screw thread, make a salad bowl, carve build a staircase, inlay the edge of a cabinet, or just drill a hole a wooden spoon, rw and make some dowel to fit into it ?
Well, the router will do all that and more. In fact it will tackle just about any task in wood !
A router is essentially a high speed electric drill which has a sharp-edged cutter in its chuck (collet) instead of a drill bit. This rotates at very high speed (rpm) and engages in the wood through an opening in the base of the tool.
The device is usually hand-held ad moved across the wood so that the hole the cutter makes is translated into a groove.
